January 9, 2015

 Social Studies: (Mrs. Volpe) – Next week we will be learning about early Japan, and how its mountains have shaped its history.  We will also be learning about how Japan’s unique culture developed and how it looked to China as a model.

Math – (Ms. Mantia) – We will begin our work with Chapter 4 next week.  This chapter is Graphing Linear Equations.  Students will learn how to graph and identify points on a coordinate plane.  Students will also learn how to create a scatter plot to represent a data set of two variables (classroom height and arm spans).

Science:  (Ms. Gorham) –   Next week we will be preparing for the Science Mid-Year Exam.The Science exam will be on Friday Jan 16th.

ELA: (Mr. Pearl) – Next week we will have our semester assessment. Additionally, we will continue our work on sonnets. Of course, students should be reading their independent reading books. See weekly assignment sheet for details.

 

 

Italian: (Mrs. Pescatore) – Students will continue to talk about weather and will learn about the weather in Italy. There will be a quiz on the four seasons and the weather expressions on text pages 145 and 146 on Thursday, January 15th.
Spanish: (Sra. Abrams) – Spanish students are working with present tense stem-changing verbs in Chapter 7. We will have one quiz on the meanings of 9 new verbs and another quiz on the conjugation of these verbs.
Spanish: (Ms. Mirabella) – Next week, students will be reviewing the verbs gustar, aburrir, and interesar. All three teams will take a quiz on these three verbs on Thursday, 1/15. Next, students will begin their review for the Chapter 7 Exam the following week. Extra help will be available on Tuesday 1/13 after school!
Health: (Mrs. Fay) –  Students will be finishing up this semester by thinking about mental health and stigma.  Students will define what stigma means and analyze examples of stigma in the media.

Math: (Mr. Peterson) –  This week, students reviewed chapters 1-3 for the math midyear.  Students took the math midyear on Friday.  Next week, we will begin chapter 4 ( graphing linear equations).

Social Studies: (Mrs. DiSipio) –  Next week, we will begin our unit on Medieval Japan.  Students will be studying how Japan’s geography shaped its society and how the early Japanese people lived.  Students should expect vocabulary and map work throughout the week.

ELA: (Mrs. Bergeron) – The ELA mid-year exam will be on Wednesday.  We have been reviewing all week, and students will be able to ask any last-minute questions on Monday and Tuesday.  We will continue with Roll of Thunder by discussing chapters 7 and 8.  Students will be asked to read chapters 9 and 10 throughout the week.

Science: (Mr. Marino) – Students have their science mid-term exam next Friday. They had a packet due last week that was worth a big grade. They will continue to have review materials to do for homework up until the exam, but nothing will take too much time to complete because they have other exams to prepare for.

 French: (Mme Abrams) – French students will be finishing up Lesson 18 and can expect a quiz on the lesson as their last grade for Term 2.

Math: (Mrs. Wilkes) – Next week we will begin our study of graphing linear equations and functions.  This is a very important part of the curriculum for 8th grade algebra students.  We will begin by looking at coordinates and scatter plots.

Social Studies: (Mrs Bova) – This week,  we reviewed notetaking skills as well as the proper format for a bibliography. Students then began gathering facts on the religion of Christianity.  Next week, students will continue to take notes on the religions of Islam and Judaism.  These notes will be used in our upcoming essay comparing the religions of Christianity, Islam and Judaism. 

Science: (Mr. Hickman) –  On Monday, January 12, 2015, students will take the open-response section of the 8th Grade Physical Science Mid-Year Assessment.  The objective section of the mid-year test will be given on Friday, January 16.  In the intervening days, students will be reviewing the concepts of matter, chemistry and density.

ELA: (Mrs. Nelson-Boyd) – Next week students will take the midyear assessment.  Classes were introduced to the debate unit, and next week teams will begin working together to plan, research, and take notes.  It is very important teammates work together and everyone does their share of the work.
